Middle of Nowhere Redesign

During the fall of my third year of college at the University of Virginia, I took a course entitled "White Out: Screening White Supremacy." The course focused on themes of whiteness in films both old and contemporary, taking a deep dive into the ways this color is presented as superior to other colors, especially black.
The course concluded with a final project and paper in which students were able to expand upon any themes discussed in class, or even provide insight of their own from a film not shown throughout the course of the semester. For my final project, I decided to redesign the film poster for Ava DuVernays Middle of Nowhere (2012), which tells the story of a strained relationship between Ruby, a lower-middle class black woman, and her imprisoned husband, Derek. The poster, pictured to the left, alludes to many themes discussed in class and is accompanied by a ten page paper, which offers further explanation into why certain visual elements were chosen.
